Equity and Total Return Swaps · Swaps Trading Guide

Dividends, resets and corporate actions change the cash flows of an equity swap. A price chart alone cannot reconstruct its performance.

Read the distribution definition

A price return excludes dividends. A total return measure includes distributions according to its methodology. Swap terms can specify gross or net treatment, tax adjustments and payment timing. Do not add a dividend again when the reference series already includes it. A headline dividend yield is not a substitute for the actual cash flow calculation.

Understand what resets

A reset can settle accrued performance, establish a new reference price or adjust notional under the agreement. Financing and equity return resets do not always occur on the same schedule. After a payment is settled, retaining it inside the next period’s return calculation can double count profit or loss.

Handle splits without inventing a gain

A two for one stock split ordinarily halves the per share price while doubling the share count, leaving economic value unchanged before market movement. A swap model must apply the contractual adjustment to its reference quantity and price. Treating the lower price as a 50% loss would create an artificial result.

Review exceptional events

Mergers, tender offers, suspensions and extraordinary distributions may trigger special adjustment or termination provisions. Identify the calculation agent and dispute process in advance. Keep the event date, adjusted terms and settlement record together so a later reconciliation can explain the change.

Try it yourself

An exposure references 1,000 shares priced at $80. A two for one split changes the reference to 2,000 shares at $40. Has its value changed solely because of the split?

Show the worked answer

No. Both configurations represent $80,000 before any market movement or contractual adjustment. The split is not itself an economic gain or loss.
