Research Execution and Governance · Swaps Trading Guide
Swap quotes are comparable only when their terms match. An exit plan should explain both the termination price and the cash needed to settle it.
Standardize the request
Specify direction, notional, effective date, maturity, benchmarks, schedules, collateral and clearing requirements. An attractive rate on different terms is not a directly comparable quote. Record quote time, size and whether the indication is executable. A stale screen midpoint is not a commitment from a counterparty.
Translate a rate difference into value
For an otherwise identical fixed payer swap, paying a lower fixed rate is generally preferable. A 2 basis point difference on $10,000,000 notional with a remaining annuity of 4 corresponds to about $8,000 of fixed leg present value. This approximation helps compare pricing but does not include every fee or credit adjustment.
Distinguish offsetting from terminating
An opposite transaction may reduce market exposure while leaving two contracts, two sets of fees and potentially different counterparties. A termination closes the agreed contract under specified terms. A novation transfers a position subject to the required consent and process. These actions can have different legal and operational consequences.
Reconcile the final cash
Confirm the valuation timestamp, accrued amounts, settlement date, fees and collateral treatment. A collateral return is not automatically additional profit on top of a termination value. Obtain a clear cash statement showing which balances are applied, returned or still due, and reconcile it with the portfolio records.
Try it yourself
Two otherwise identical quotes differ by 3 basis points on $4,000,000 notional with annuity 2.5. What approximate fixed leg value difference does that imply?
Show the worked answer
The difference is $3,000, calculated as $4,000,000 times 0.0003 times 2.5. Direction and additional costs determine which quote is economically preferable.
