Research Execution and Governance · Swaps Trading Guide

A swap risk mandate connects the purpose of a trade with exposure limits, liquidity capacity and review responsibilities. It turns technical knowledge into a repeatable decision process.

Write the purpose and permitted scope

State whether the activity hedges a liability, manages funding or takes a defined market exposure. Identify permitted products, currencies, counterparties and maturities. A general permission to use derivatives is too broad to explain the risks of a particular credit, currency or equity swap. Access and regulatory eligibility must be established separately.

Use several complementary limits

Notional, market value, signed sensitivity, key rate exposure and stressed loss answer different questions. Add counterparty concentration and available collateral capacity. A small current value does not imply a small future loss. Limits should reflect the actual portfolio and funding resources rather than copy an arbitrary industry number.

Assign review responsibilities

A repeatable process identifies who verifies terms, approves models, checks independent prices, reconciles collateral and handles disputes. Review performance against the original hedge objective, including the underlying asset or liability. A derivative loss can be consistent with a successful hedge if the combined exposure improves as intended.

Complete a practical learning review

Before considering a real transaction, be able to draw every cash flow, calculate a simple settlement, explain the main sensitivities and describe an adverse liquidity scenario. Then identify what information or specialist review is still missing. Completing educational lessons builds understanding, but it does not confer professional authorization or make every swap suitable.

Try it yourself

A proposed hedge meets its DV01 limit but breaches the stressed collateral capacity limit. Has it passed the overall risk review?

Show the worked answer

No. Passing one measure does not override another binding constraint. The proposal needs resizing, a different structure, additional committed liquidity or rejection under the applicable process.
