Strategies and Trade Execution · Warrants & Rights

A put warrant can offset part of a shareholding loss, but the protection depends on strike, entitlement, expiry, settlement and issuer performance. The premium is an explicit cost of the hedge.

Match the asset and the horizon

Start with the shares you own, the period to protect and the loss threshold you want to study. A warrant referencing an index may not track an individual stock closely. A warrant expiring before the relevant event leaves a gap in protection. Settlement reference and currency should also match the analysis.

Build an expiry payoff example

Assume 1,000 shares are worth $100 each. A put warrant has a $95 strike, represents 0.1 share and costs $0.60. Buying 10,000 warrants gives a nominal entitlement matching 1,000 shares and costs $6,000.

At an $80 expiry reference, the shares are worth $80,000 and the put payoff is $15,000. Combined value is $95,000 before accounting for the $6,000 premium. Relative to the original $100,000 holding, the total economic loss is $11,000 before other expenses. The hedge reduces a $20,000 share loss but does not eliminate losses.

Include the cost when the hedge is unused

If the stock finishes at $100, the puts expire without positive value in this example. The shareholding remains worth $100,000 while the $6,000 premium has been spent. Protection has a cost even when the adverse event never occurs.

Before expiry, nominal entitlement and delta are different. If the underlying option delta is negative 0.40, the 10,000 warrants initially provide approximately negative 400 shares of local delta, not negative 1,000. Delta changes with the market. Matching an expiry quantity does not create a continuously neutral portfolio.

List the remaining risks

Issuer default, unavailable quotes, valuation averaging and corporate action terms can weaken the practical hedge. Renewing a hedge after expiry also creates new costs and timing decisions. Treat the result as a conditional risk reduction, not an unconditional insurance guarantee.

Try it yourself

How many put warrants with a 0.25 share entitlement nominally match 600 shares at expiry?

Show the worked answer

2,400 warrants. This quantity matches the nominal entitlement only. Strike, delta, timing, settlement and issuer risk still determine the actual protection.
