A complete review connects the investment thesis to the exact security, its cash flows and the actions required to manage it. The final output should support a decision, including the decision to do nothing.
Write a short decision memo
State the intended exposure, the reason for choosing this security and the evidence that could invalidate the view. Identify the alternative, such as holding shares, using a different instrument or retaining cash. The memo should make clear why the contract fits the timing rather than merely repeating a favorable company story.
Attach the contract and calculation record
Include the prospectus or offer document, amendments, entitlement convention, payoff formula and deadlines. Add a worked calculation that another reader can reproduce. For a warrant, show premium, exercise cash and expiry outcomes separately. For rights, compare subscription, sale and lapse using the whole shareholding.
For example, a favorable share forecast can coexist with a warrant loss if the premium implies a higher breakeven. A discounted rights offer can still be unattractive if it adds concentration or funds a weak business. The calculations should challenge the thesis rather than decorate it.
Define execution and monitoring
Record the intended quantity, maximum acceptable price, spread assumptions and available funding. Identify who sends any exercise instruction and which confirmation proves acceptance. Set review points for issuer announcements, corporate actions, quote deterioration and approaching deadlines.
Keep unresolved facts explicit. An unknown conversion ratio, inaccessible subscription process or unverified redemption clause is a reason to pause the decision, not an invitation to fill the gap with a market convention.
Review the outcome honestly
After closing or settlement, reconcile cash, fees, shares and timing. Separate results caused by the underlying view from those caused by volatility, contract terms, execution or an operational mistake. A profitable trade can still reveal a weak process, while a loss can occur within a sound risk plan. Use the review to improve the next decision without rewriting what was known at the time.
Try it yourself
A trade made money, but the investor discovered afterward that a redemption deadline was nearly missed. Should the process be rated successful solely from profit?
Show the worked answer
No. The result and the process should be reviewed separately. The monitoring gap remains a material weakness even though this particular outcome was profitable.
