Contract Terms and Settlement · Warrants & Rights
The exercise price is only one part of the funding calculation. The entitlement ratio determines how many shares or units each warrant represents and therefore how much cash is required.
Define the ratio before using it
One document may quote warrants required per share, while another quotes shares represented by each warrant. These are reciprocals. If four warrants correspond to one share, each warrant represents 0.25 share. Store both the numerical value and its definition in your worksheet.
Calculate total exposure and payment
Suppose you own 1,200 deliverable call warrants, four are required for one share and the exercise price is $18 per share. The holding can deliver 300 shares and needs $5,400 of exercise cash. If each warrant originally cost $0.90, the purchase cost was another $1,080.
The total historical cash committed after exercise is $6,480 before fees, equivalent to $21.60 per delivered share. That accounting figure is useful for tracking the whole trade, but it does not mean exercising is the best choice today. Compare current sale proceeds and alternatives separately.
Keep trading units separate
A board lot governs the normal trading quantity on an exchange. It does not necessarily define the exercise ratio. A lot of 1,000 warrants might represent 100 shares, 250 shares or another amount. Fractional exercise entitlements may be rounded, paid in cash or disallowed.
Cash settled index warrants often use a monetary multiplier per index point instead of a share count. A payoff of 80 index points with a $0.02 multiplier gives $1.60 per warrant before any contractual conversion or expenses.
Check funding before placing the trade
An investor intending to sell before expiry may still face poor liquidity near the end. Document what happens if sale is impractical. Cash availability, exercise eligibility and settlement procedures should be known before a position is built, not discovered on the last trading day.
Try it yourself
You own 900 warrants with a ratio of three warrants per share and a $7 exercise price. What is the exercise payment?
Show the worked answer
The entitlement is 300 shares and the exercise payment is $2,100. Warrant purchase cost and broker charges are additional.
