Research Execution and Governance · Swaps Trading Guide

Swap research needs more than a column of rates. Preserve contract definitions, timestamps and data quality checks so a valuation can be reproduced.

Separate observations by purpose

A published benchmark fixing, an indicative dealer quote and a reported transaction are different observations. A transaction report may describe a particular size, date or package rather than a current executable market. Store the observation type with its timestamp and source. Missing values must remain missing rather than becoming zero rates.

Preserve contract identity

A useful record includes currencies, benchmark, maturity, effective date, payment frequency, day count, collateral assumptions and quote units. A rate of 4 could mean 4%, while 0.04 is its decimal form. A spread in basis points requires another conversion. Explicit units prevent errors that can be larger than the trade’s expected return.

Build layered checks

Validate schedules and known fixings first, then reprice curve inputs and compare independent valuations. Flag stale quotes, duplicated trades and unexpected discontinuities. Investigate differences using cash flows and conventions instead of forcing one model to match another through an unexplained adjustment.

Keep a reproducible snapshot

Archive the data version, valuation date, model settings and exceptions used in a research result. Public swap repositories can support investigation, but their fields and reporting rules need interpretation. Confirm permitted data use before redistributing any dataset. A research workflow should distinguish observed transactions from model estimates in its output.

Try it yourself

A data field reports 75 basis points. What decimal rate should a simple coupon formula use?

Show the worked answer

Use 0.0075, which is 0.75%. Entering 0.75 would represent 75% and produce a result one hundred times too large.
