Two figures with different purposes
Microsoft's fiscal 2026 release reported diluted earnings of $17.95 per share under GAAP. It also presented adjusted results excluding the impact of investments in OpenAI. The company explains those adjustments in its reconciliation, which should be read before using the adjusted series.
Reported context: Microsoft fiscal fourth quarter and full year 2026 results.
Why the denominator matters
A price to earnings ratio divides a share price by earnings per share. If two analysts use different earnings definitions, they can report different multiples for the same stock without either calculation being arithmetically wrong.
The analytical question is whether the chosen earnings measure represents the economic outcome being valued. Excluding a volatile investment effect may help isolate operating performance, but it does not make the investment economically irrelevant to shareholders.
Keep periods and assumptions aligned
Do not compare a historical annual earnings number for one company with a forecast for another and present the result as a like for like ranking. Use consistent periods, explain adjustments and keep the assumptions behind forecasts visible.
Cash generation provides a separate test because accounting earnings and available cash can diverge. Investment spending, working capital and financing commitments affect what owners can ultimately receive.
A practical valuation record
Record the share price date, earnings period, accounting basis and important exclusions together. Then examine whether the valuation remains acceptable under less favorable operating assumptions. This article does not quote a current multiple. Its purpose is to prevent a seemingly precise valuation from resting on an inconsistent earnings definition.
