Establish the earnings base

Costco reported fiscal 2026 diluted earnings of $20.76 per share, compared with $18.21 in the prior year. Those are historical annual results. They are not a forecast of the next twelve months and should not be presented as one in a valuation table.

Reported context: Costco fiscal fourth quarter and full year results, September 24, 2026.

Business quality and purchase price are separate

A retailer can retain customers, expand its network and produce growing earnings while delivering a disappointing stock return if the purchase price already assumes even stronger performance. Operating success does not remove valuation risk.

A useful exercise is to separate future earnings growth from the multiple investors may pay for those earnings. In a purely illustrative case, 10% earnings growth combined with a 10% decline in the valuation multiple produces a small decline in price before dividends. This is arithmetic, not a Costco price forecast.

Test the economics of expansion

More locations can add sales while requiring land, buildings, staff and inventory. Assess whether the extra profit and cash generation justify the capital committed. Total revenue growth alone cannot answer that question.

Membership and customer loyalty may support the business, but their value should be evaluated through retention, recurring economics and the spending needed to maintain the offering. Avoid treating a strong reputation as a substitute for those measurements.

What to compare next

Use a clearly dated market price with a consistent earnings period, then test slower growth and a less generous multiple. The resulting range is more informative than a single optimistic target. This analysis provides a framework and does not claim that Costco is currently overvalued or undervalued.
