The declared distribution

Microsoft announced a quarterly dividend of $0.98 per share on September 15, 2026, an increase of $0.07. Payment is scheduled for December 10, with both the record date and the date shares begin trading without this dividend on November 19.

Reported context: Microsoft dividend declaration, September 15, 2026.

What the payment means in practice

An eligible holder of 100 shares would receive $98 before withholding taxes, account charges or currency conversion. Multiplying the quarterly amount by four gives $3.92 per share, but that is an illustrative annual rate. It is not a promise that the board will declare four identical future payments.

The yield also depends on the price paid for the shares. A higher dividend does not necessarily mean a higher yield if the stock price has risen faster. Comparing cash income without comparing purchase prices can produce a misleading conclusion.

Eligibility is not free profit

Buying on the date shares trade without the dividend generally does not create entitlement to that distribution. Investors should confirm settlement and eligibility with their broker, particularly when moving between markets or holding through an intermediary.

A dividend transfers value from the company to shareholders. It does not create an equivalent amount of new wealth on payment day, and market prices can reflect that transfer.

The shareholder test

Consider whether operating cash generation can fund the dividend alongside necessary investment and other obligations. A distribution that grows sustainably can be useful for an income plan. Its attractiveness still depends on business risk, valuation and the investor's net receipt after applicable costs. This article records the declared schedule as checked on October 12, 2026.
