The confirmed reporting schedule

JPMorganChase plans to release its third quarter 2026 results at approximately 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time on October 13, followed by an 8:30 a.m. conference call. This preview was prepared before those results. No earnings surprise or share price reaction is assumed.

Three tests for the banking business

First, separate loan growth from the margin earned on those loans. A bank can collect more interest because its balance sheet is larger while earning less on each dollar of assets. Compare net interest income with net interest margin and examine the cost of deposits alongside the yield on lending.

Second, distinguish losses already taken from provisions for possible future losses. A provision increase can reflect a more cautious forecast rather than a sudden rise in missed payments. Charge offs, delinquencies and reserve coverage help establish whether credit quality has actually weakened.

Third, assess fee income without treating every business as equally repeatable. Trading and transaction activity can support a quarter without creating a durable increase in ordinary customer revenue.

What could change the shareholder outlook

The most useful positive combination would be stable deposit funding, manageable credit losses and a credible outlook for recurring income. A strong headline profit with rising funding costs and deteriorating consumer credit would deserve closer scrutiny. These are analytical scenarios, not predictions of the release.

Capital returns should be read against capital requirements. A larger repurchase plan does not by itself show that the shares are inexpensive or that every authorized dollar will be spent.

Questions for the call

Listen for the assumptions behind management guidance, particularly deposit competition, loan demand and credit normalization. Record what changed from the previous outlook before deciding whether a stronger quarter represents better future earnings power.
