Hedge Fund Foundations · Hedge Funds

A fund relies on several organizations. Understanding their separate responsibilities helps an investor see where decisions, assets, records and independent checks sit.

Who decides and who records

The investment manager selects positions and manages the portfolio. An administrator may maintain investor records, calculate NAV and process subscriptions or redemptions. The precise scope is contractual. An administrator can rely on prices or information supplied by the manager, so its name alone does not prove independent valuation of every asset.

A custodian holds assets under the relevant arrangement. A prime broker can provide financing, securities borrowing, execution support and custody related services. One institution can perform several roles, which makes the legal agreements and asset treatment more important than the number of logos in a presentation.

Trace an illustrative transaction

A manager instructs a purchase of $2 million in shares. The trade is executed and settled through the relevant counterparties. The position and cash movement should enter the fund’s accounting records and reconciliation process. A review asks whether independent records agree and who investigates an unresolved difference.

An auditor examines financial statements under the applicable audit framework. An audit is not a guarantee against future losses or every instance of misconduct. Ask which legal entity is audited, the reporting period, any qualifications and whether the signed statements match the fund being offered.

Verify the chain of responsibility

Confirm material service relationships using independently obtained contact information where access is available. Ask who approves transfers, who can change payment instructions, who challenges unusual marks and who can override a control. A famous service provider is less useful if its engagement excludes the area that matters.

Draw a simple map of the fund, manager, accounts and providers. Mark the decision maker and independent checker for cash, valuation and investor reporting. Where one person both initiates and approves a sensitive action, request an explanation of compensating controls and escalation procedures.

Try it yourself

A fund lists an administrator but says the manager supplies every private asset valuation. Which follow up matters most?

Show the worked answer

Ask how those supplied values are challenged, what independent evidence is used, who resolves disputes and how the process is reflected in audited statements. Administration and independent price verification are not automatically the same service.
