Margin and Contract Lifecycle · Futures Trading Guide

Futures collateral is a performance bond, while price changes create cash gains or losses. A viable trade must survive both the market move and the funding requirement.

Separate three amounts

Initial margin is the collateral requirement for establishing a position. Maintenance margin is a threshold relevant to continuing to hold it. Variation settlement transfers the cash effect of price changes. Brokers can impose requirements above clearing minimums, change their policies or liquidate positions under their account terms. Do not assume a grace period to add funds.

Trace an account through settlement

Assume a fictional position requires $5,000 initially and has a $4,500 maintenance threshold. An account starts with $6,000. A $1,800 loss reduces equity to $4,200. If the required restoration level remains $5,000, the shortfall is $800. Depositing that amount restores collateral but does not reverse the $1,800 trading loss. If requirements also rise to $6,500, the shortfall becomes $2,300.

Plan for the timing of money

Collateral can be demanded before a longer term thesis has time to work. Check what assets are accepted, their valuation haircuts and the deadlines for transfers. Cash kept in another institution may not arrive quickly enough. A hedge that offsets an economic loss elsewhere can still require cash on the futures leg before the offsetting business receipt is collected.

Reconcile rather than estimate

Use the broker statement to distinguish account equity, available funds, required collateral and variation flows. Confirm the settlement currency and conversion charges. Record changed requirements in the trade journal, especially around volatile periods or delivery. A dashboard displaying positive available funds is only a current snapshot. Stress the account against an adverse move and a simultaneous rise in collateral requirements before choosing quantity.

Try it yourself

An account holds $9,000. It loses $2,500 and the broker raises required collateral to $8,000. What additional cash would restore the requirement?

Show the worked answer

Equity becomes $6,500. The shortfall is $1,500, assuming no other positions, fees or collateral adjustments.
