The most familiar underlying is not necessarily the most suitable contract. Compare size, liquidity, trading hours and settlement before choosing a market.
Start with what can be researched
Choose a market whose price drivers and contract terms you can explain. An equity index responds to a different set of exposures than a crop with seasonal supply constraints. Record the scheduled information that could affect the position during its intended holding period. Familiarity with the product should include its settlement rules, not only recognition of the asset name.
Compare the actual maturities
The nearest maturity is not always the most liquid. Compare current bid and ask quotes, available size, volume and open interest for the exact contracts under consideration. Check their timestamps and whether data are delayed. A continuous chart joins successive contracts for analysis and is not itself the contract you send to an exchange. The trading ticket must identify a listed maturity.
Use a consistent cash comparison
Suppose contract A has a $5 multiplier and a typical illustrative daily range of 40 points. That range represents $200 per contract. Contract B has a $20 multiplier and a 20 point range, representing $400. A smaller quoted range therefore does not imply smaller cash exposure. These range estimates describe past movement and do not cap the next day’s loss.
Make access part of the decision
Confirm product eligibility, supported order types, data fees, commissions and the broker’s delivery restrictions. In the United States, check the intermediary’s registration and disciplinary record through the relevant regulator. Save a dated contract card and a plan for missed connections or rejected orders. A market that cannot be monitored during its important releases may be unsuitable for the intended short term method, even if its minimum collateral looks attractive.
Try it yourself
A continuous chart shows September data, but the order ticket selects December. Which contract’s quotes and settlement calendar should govern execution?
Show the worked answer
The December contract on the actual order ticket. First resolve the mismatch and compare its own liquidity and dates rather than relying on the continuous chart label.
