Forex Explained / Risk & Position Sizing
Create a repeatable review covering the instrument, counterparty, costs, release calendar and exit process before considering currency exposure.
Confirm what the product actually is
Write down whether the instrument is a currency conversion, forward, future, option or retail derivative. Confirm its quotation, contract size, settlement process and trading hours. Similar looking symbols can refer to materially different obligations.
For a retail service, identify the legal counterparty and check the relevant regulator’s official register and warnings. A polished website or familiar brand name alone does not verify authorisation. Registration does not eliminate investment or operational risk.
Make the economics visible
Record the bid and ask, commission, financing method, conversion charges and potential withdrawal costs. Ask how rates and spreads can change around announcements, weekends and illiquid periods. A low headline spread may not describe the total cost.
Calculate notional exposure, required collateral, planned loss and a more severe stress loss separately. Check overlapping currency legs elsewhere in the account. If an essential input cannot be explained, the review is incomplete.
Plan execution and interruptions
Identify the intended order type and its limitations. A market order prioritises execution rather than a specific price. A limit controls the acceptable price but may not fill. Stop behaviour depends on the order and venue.
Check forthcoming releases, holidays and any contract expiry. Record how to monitor an order, confirm a fill and respond to an outage or rejected request. Avoid treating a screen notification as proof of final execution until the account record confirms it.
Define the decision and review
A checklist can end in proceed, revise or do nothing. It should not become a ritual that automatically approves every idea. Write the unresolved concerns and the conditions needed to resolve them.
After any completed activity, compare intended and actual execution, costs and behaviour. Record errors even when the financial outcome was favourable. This worksheet is a research and process aid. It does not replace product documentation, personal risk assessment or appropriate professional advice.
Check your understanding
The expected move seems attractive, but the financing calculation and liquidation rule are unclear. What should the checklist conclude?
See the answer
The review is incomplete. Clarify the terms and reassess the exposure before proceeding. An appealing forecast does not resolve unknown contractual or execution risks.
