Forex Explained / Strategies & Portfolio Applications

Bring quotation, macro research, positioning and risk together in a concise currency research note that another reader can inspect and challenge.

Choose one precise question

Select a pair and explain which currency is the base and which is the quote. Define the research horizon and the question you want to answer. For example, investigate how a hypothetical change in relative growth and policy expectations could affect EUR/USD over three months.

This is a research exercise, not an instruction to open a position. Record the date of the note and separate current observations from invented scenario inputs. If you cannot verify a factual input, label it unavailable rather than filling the gap with a plausible number.

Build an evidence page

For both economies, list the latest relevant inflation and growth releases, policy settings and forthcoming events. Record units, reporting periods and revision status. Link to the original publications and explain how each observation relates to the question.

Add a chart observation and, where relevant, a positioning snapshot. State the quotation, interval and observation date. Explain what each item cannot establish. Several indicators built from the same underlying series should not be counted as independent confirmation.

Write scenarios and an exposure worksheet

Describe a central case and two alternatives, including the mechanism and the evidence that would favour each. Identify the strongest argument against your initial view. Avoid numerical scenario probabilities unless you can explain how they were estimated.

For an entirely hypothetical implementation, calculate the currency legs, notional value, pip or tick value, costs and adverse scenario loss. Assess overlapping exposures in a sample portfolio. Keep required margin separate from the risk estimate, and explain why the loss could exceed a planned exit amount.

End with a decision and review date

Summarise what the evidence supports, what remains uncertain and what would change your assessment. A conclusion to wait for more information is legitimate. Set a review date linked to the research horizon or a relevant release.

At review, compare the original reasoning with the evidence that arrived. Did the expected mechanism occur, or did an unrelated event drive the result? Preserve the original note and add an update. Completing this path builds a repeatable research process. It does not confer a professional qualification or guarantee investment outcomes.

Check your understanding

What should a completed capstone contain before it can be reviewed by another reader?

See the answer

A clear pair and horizon, dated and sourced facts, labelled assumptions, competing scenarios, transparent exposure arithmetic, limitations, a conclusion and a review date. The reader should be able to distinguish evidence from interpretation.
