A blockchain transfer proves a recorded action, not the owner’s motive. Learn to read transaction evidence before calling a movement a purchase or sale.

Start with the transaction record

Check the network, transaction hash, status, block time, sender, recipient and asset identifiers. An explorer can show a transaction’s top level call alongside token transfer events and other execution details. A failed transaction may consume network fees without completing the intended transfer. Do not rely only on the displayed transaction value.

Reconcile units and events

Token quantities require the correct decimal precision. Multiple transfer events can belong to one contract interaction, and routing through several contracts can make gross movement look much larger than the user’s net change. Compare the relevant balances and logs before summing activity. Verify that a similarly named token is the intended contract.

Separate facts from inference

Suppose a wallet sends 10,000 tokens to an address labelled as an exchange. The recorded transfer is a fact. A future sale is a hypothesis. The movement could be collateral, custody, internal reorganisation or preparation for trading. Labels may be incomplete or outdated, and a label does not prove the identity of every beneficial owner using that address.

Write an evidence based note

Record the hash, timestamp, amount, asset and label source. State which observations support a possible interpretation and which remain unknown. If a swap is visible, identify the amounts and route without assuming a wider investment strategy. Public visibility differs across networks, and privacy features can limit inference. Avoid attributing criminal intent, insider knowledge or a named person to an unknown wallet. Good analysis can end with an unresolved question.

Try it yourself

A large transfer reaches an exchange labelled address. What additional evidence would support a claim that it was sold?

Show the worked answer

An observable swap or reliable execution record would help. A deposit alone does not establish a sale, sale price or the sender’s identity.
