Large transfers can matter, but counting them carelessly creates false signals. Learn how net flows, internal transfers and labels change the interpretation.
Define the measurement boundary
An exchange inflow metric usually tracks transfers into a labelled set of addresses. Outflow tracks the opposite direction. The result depends on which addresses are included and how internal movements are treated. A revision to the address set can alter historical figures without a new market event.
Calculate net flow carefully
In a fictional day, observed deposits are 8,000 coins and withdrawals are 6,500. Net inflow is 1,500. If 2,000 of the recorded deposits are actually an internal transfer from an unlabelled exchange wallet, the economic interpretation changes. A classification error can be larger than the headline signal. Report gross flows and net flows rather than presenting one as the other.
Distinguish concentration from intent
A large address may belong to a custodian holding assets for many clients. Several smaller addresses may belong to one entity. Wallet size alone is therefore an imperfect measure of investor concentration. A whale transfer does not show whether the owner is hedged elsewhere, moving collateral or changing custody. Compare the amount with the asset’s liquidity and the network’s usual activity.
Use flows to ask better questions
Choose a consistent time window and compare similar weekdays or event periods when appropriate. Examine unusual transfers individually, avoid counting bridge minting and underlying deposits as independent demand, and record label confidence. Price, derivatives exposure and exchange balances can provide context but do not turn uncertain attribution into certainty. A useful conclusion names the observed flow, plausible alternatives and the evidence needed to distinguish them.
Try it yourself
An exchange moves coins from one of its known wallets to another. Should that movement be counted as new customer inflow?
Show the worked answer
No, if both are correctly classified within the same exchange boundary. Counting it would inflate activity without showing new customer deposits.
