Network activity becomes useful only when you know what it measures. Connect usage, security and token economics before drawing a valuation conclusion.
Define the research question
A network can be useful without its token being attractively valued. Begin with the service provided, the users paying for it and the mechanism connecting that activity to token demand or holder economics. Compare competing networks on consistent periods and functions rather than a single headline metric.
Measure activity with context
Addresses are not people. One user can control many addresses, and automated activity can dominate counts. Transaction totals can include low value transfers, bots and repeated interactions. Check fees paid, retained usage and the mix of applications. Compare nominal figures with activity adjusted for changes in token price when that distinction matters.
Study security and control
Look at how transactions are validated, which actors can upgrade contracts or pause components, and whether critical infrastructure depends on a small set of operators. Documentation, governance records and incident reports answer different questions. An audit reduces uncertainty about its reviewed scope but does not guarantee future safety. A network’s native consensus does not protect every application built on it from its own contract errors.
Build a simple research table
For a fictional network, suppose monthly fees rise from $1 million to $1.4 million while incentive payments rise from $0.2 million to $0.8 million. Gross fees rose 40%, yet fees minus those incentives fell from $0.8 million to $0.6 million. This simplified comparison is not an accounting profit measure. It highlights why subsidised growth deserves investigation. Record comparable definitions, the observation window and unresolved data gaps before deciding whether growth supports the token thesis.
Try it yourself
Active addresses double but fees and retained application use stay flat. Does that prove economic adoption doubled?
Show the worked answer
No. It may reflect new users, automation, fragmented wallets or incentives. Investigate the composition and persistence of activity.
