A monitoring process should detect changes in the investment case without turning every daily price move into a new decision. Use scheduled reviews and specific event triggers.

Separate routine and exceptional reviews

A routine review can follow factsheets and periodic reports. An exceptional review is triggered by a material event such as a manager departure, financing problem, policy change or restructuring proposal. The frequency should match the investment’s complexity and your needs.

Maintain a short dashboard with holdings, gearing, discount basis, earnings, distributions and key deadlines. Record dates and changes. A number without its earlier value or context rarely tells a complete story.

Test the original thesis

Suppose the original case relied on moderate borrowing and diversified income. If borrowing rises and income becomes concentrated in a few assets, investigate even when the share price is performing well. A profitable position can still drift away from its intended role.

Conversely, a price fall alone does not prove the thesis has failed. Separate market movement from evidence about assets, governance and financing. This prevents both automatic selling and automatic averaging down.

Close the review with an action

A useful review ends with a documented decision: maintain, investigate, resize or exit, together with reasons. No trade is a valid outcome when the evidence supports it. Set a next review date or an event that would reopen the decision.

Keep prior notes rather than rewriting history after outcomes are known. The record helps distinguish a sound process facing uncertainty from a lucky result or an avoidable analytical mistake.

Try it yourself

The discount widens but the portfolio and financing are unchanged. What should you check before treating the move as a broken investment case?

Show the worked answer

Check NAV timing, market liquidity, investor demand, new announcements and the assumptions behind the original thesis. Discount movement alone does not settle the question.
