A coupon is a contractual rate, a dividend is a distribution under share terms, and total return measures the whole investment outcome. Keep their denominators and timing separate.
Name the number correctly
A 6% coupon on $100 face value implies $6 annually when paid under that simple convention. Paying $120 for the security does not increase that amount to $7.20. The cash income yield at a $120 purchase price is 5%. A preferred dividend may be expressed against a liquidation preference rather than the market price. The relevant terms determine the calculation.
Measure the full holding period
For a simple position with no additional contributions, total return equals distributions received plus sale proceeds minus purchase cost, divided by purchase cost. Include dealing costs consistently. A quoted capital gain and a quoted distribution yield cannot be added without checking whether their periods and denominators match.
Work through a complete example
Buy a security for $102 and pay $1 to transact. Receive $6 during the year, then sell for $99 with another $1 selling cost. Net sale proceeds are $98. The final cash total is $104 against an initial $103, giving a gain of $1 and a return of about 0.97%. The coupon headline of 6% describes neither the purchase yield nor this realised outcome.
If the $6 payment is cancelled, the same trade loses $5 before any tax effect. If the security is not sold, a valuation return can still be calculated using a defensible closing price, but that price is not a guaranteed exit quote.
Compare like periods and assumptions
An income distribution paid quarterly is not a quarterly return equal to the annual coupon. Annualising a short successful holding period assumes repeatable opportunities that may not exist. For research, show the observation period, costs, currency and whether income was actually received. Keep projected and realised returns in separate columns so a forecast never becomes a historical fact.
Try it yourself
You pay $50 with no fees, receive $2 and sell for $47. Calculate income yield and total return.
Show the worked answer
Income yield is $2 ÷ $50, or 4%. Total return is ($2 plus $47 minus $50) ÷ $50, or a loss of 2%.
