The disclosed benchmark change

Franklin Templeton’s Retirement Advantage 2065 Trust disclosure states that the custom benchmark allocations changed effective February 1, 2026 to include more foreign exposure and less high yield exposure. The trust is part of a target retirement series available to eligible qualified retirement plans.

The disclosure identifies a change in the benchmark’s composition. It does not, by itself, provide a complete record of securities purchased or sold by the trust on that date.

Why a benchmark change deserves attention

FOLITIC analysis: A benchmark defines the reference portfolio used to interpret results. Changing its composition can alter expected behaviour and make comparisons across periods more complicated. A manager may appear to have improved or weakened relative performance partly because the yardstick has changed.

For a target retirement strategy, the benchmark also interacts with the intended path of risk over time. The investor should understand both the allocation appropriate to the retirement year and the method used to assess that allocation. A larger foreign component can introduce different currency and regional exposures, while reducing high yield can change credit sensitivity.

The practical review

The most useful comparison aligns the benchmark definition, actual holdings and reporting dates. Investors should look for an explanation of the change in the fund documents before drawing conclusions from a performance chart. A target year provides a framework for portfolio construction, but it does not guarantee a particular retirement income, protect principal or determine whether the strategy fits every participant approaching that date.
