FX Forwards and Market Quotes · Forwards Trading Guide

Forward points adjust a spot quotation into a price for a later value date. Their sign does not predict the direction of the currency.

Start with an outright rate

An outright forward quote states the complete exchange rate for a specific future date. A dealer can instead quote the difference between spot and forward as forward points. To interpret that number, first confirm the point scale and the currency pair convention. EUR/USD commonly expresses one pip as 0.0001 dollars per euro, while other pairs use different scales.

Apply a signed adjustment

Suppose spot EUR/USD is 1.0800 and a single indicative forward adjustment is positive 35 pips. The illustrative outright rate is 1.0835. If the adjustment is negative 20 pips, the result is 1.0780. For EUR 200,000, those rates imply $216,700 and $215,600 respectively. This example uses one reference quote, not an executable bid and ask pair.

Understand the economic reason

Interest rate differences and currency funding conditions help determine forward points. A base currency priced above spot is at a forward premium in that quotation. The inverse quotation changes the numerical appearance, so always name the base currency. A positive adjustment is not a promise that the future spot rate will rise. The realised spot can finish above or below the agreed forward.

Use the dealer’s final quote

Actual transactions require the correct side of a two sided outright market. Ask whether displayed points are signed and how the platform combines spot and forward bid and ask. Also check whether the spot component and forward adjustment were captured together. A stale spot reference plus fresh points can create a price that nobody will transact. Save the complete outright rate on the confirmation.

Try it yourself

An indicative EUR/USD spot is 1.1200 and the forward adjustment is negative 45 pips. What is the outright rate and the dollar amount for EUR 60,000?

Show the worked answer

The rate is 1.1155 and the dollar amount is $66,930. The adjustment is 0.0045, which is subtracted from spot.
