Forward Contract Foundations · Forwards Trading Guide
An accurate contract description includes amounts, currencies, units and dates. A familiar currency pair name alone is not enough.
Write both currency amounts
For EUR/USD quoted as dollars per euro, a forward buying EUR 100,000 at 1.1000 requires $110,000. EUR is the base currency and USD is the quote currency. Reversing the quotation produces approximately 0.90909 euros per dollar. Multiply an amount in the base currency by the quote to obtain the other amount. Divide when converting in the opposite direction.
Do not confuse the units
A commodity price of 650 cents per unit is $6.50, not $650. A contract covering 10,000 units therefore represents $65,000 at that price. Notional is the reference scale of the trade. Collateral is security supporting performance. Market value measures what the existing contract is worth under a valuation method. These quantities answer different questions and should occupy separate columns.
Record dates precisely
Trade date is when the agreement is made. Value date is when currencies or other amounts are exchanged. A maturity described as three months usually follows specific market calendar conventions rather than a universal count of 90 days. Where delivery occurs during a window, document how selection, notice and pricing work. Do not replace a confirmed date with an approximate label.
Create a reusable identity card
Record legal counterparties, direction, underlying, notional currency or quantity, quote convention, fixed rate, fixing details, settlement dates and delivery method. Add the relevant business invoice or trading mandate and document identifiers. Review the identity card against the confirmation independently. This catches a reversed currency trade before a later profit calculation gives a misleading sense of control.
Try it yourself
GBP/USD is quoted at 1.2500 dollars per pound. What dollar payment corresponds to buying GBP 80,000 forward?
Show the worked answer
$100,000. The calculation is GBP 80,000 × 1.2500 USD per GBP. It is not GBP 80,000 divided by 1.2500.
