Similar direction, different starting points
September left the ECB deposit facility rate at 2.50% and Japan’s overnight call rate guideline at around 1.25%. Both banks raised their settings, yet the two economies entered the decisions from different monetary conditions.
The 1.25 percentage point difference between these headline references is not a tradable return. A real position depends on the instrument, broker or bank, financing terms and the price at which the currency exposure is established.
The relative outlook can move without a wider rate gap
FOLITIC analysis: If both central banks increase rates by the same amount, the current numerical gap can remain unchanged. The expected future gap may still change if one bank signals greater concern about persistent inflation or stronger confidence in wage growth.
For EUR/JPY, the relevant question is not which bank used firmer language. It is whether the market’s expected path for euro rates changed relative to its path for Japanese rates. The answer requires comparable maturities and attention to what was already anticipated.
Funding risk is only one part of the position
Yen funded exposure to euro assets combines a financing decision with an asset decision and a currency decision. A favourable income difference cannot prevent losses if the asset falls or the yen appreciates sufficiently.
There can also be a mismatch between financing that reprices frequently and an investment held for a longer period. A position that appears affordable today may become more expensive to maintain. Leverage amplifies that mismatch because the financing obligation does not disappear when the investment value declines.
Use separate evidence for each economy
For Japan, wage developments and underlying inflation help assess policy sustainability. For the euro area, distinguish energy related price pressure from broader domestic inflation. Review growth and import costs on both sides rather than treating EUR/JPY as a simple ranking of interest rates. The cross removes the dollar as the quoted counterpart, but it does not remove global market risk.
