Asset Classes and Global Exposure · ETFs

Equity ETFs can cover the world or a narrow industry. Holdings count alone does not reveal how concentrated the economic risks are.

Identify the breadth of the mandate

A broad equity fund may span countries and industries. A country fund focuses on one market, while sector and thematic funds narrow the opportunity set further. A theme can cross conventional sector boundaries without becoming broadly diversified. Read the holdings and methodology instead of assuming that a familiar theme includes every business likely to benefit.

Distinguish listing country from business exposure

A company listed in one country may earn much of its revenue abroad. A country ETF therefore is not a direct measurement of that country's domestic economy. Conversely, international revenue does not erase local legal, currency or political risks. Use country weights as one lens and supplement them with company and industry analysis.

Measure concentration in dollars

If 30% of a $20,000 sector fund is in three companies, $6,000 depends on those positions. Another broad fund in your account might hold the same firms. Count total exposures across the portfolio before treating each ticker as a separate source of diversification. Shared suppliers, funding conditions and customer demand can create concentration even where company names differ.

Set the role before selecting the fund

A thematic ETF can represent a deliberate limited view, but its attractive story is not a valuation argument. Compare the price paid, index inclusion rules, turnover and business maturity of its holdings. Decide what would cause you to reduce the allocation and what maximum loss you can tolerate. A strong industry outlook can coexist with disappointing shareholder returns if expectations were already expensive.

Try it yourself

A portfolio holds $8,000 in a sector ETF with 40% in one company. What is the direct contribution of that fund to the company exposure?

Show the worked answer

It contributes $3,200. Add any exposure through other funds or individual shares to find the complete position.
