What happened
Germany's new industrial orders fell 10.6% in August from July, according to figures released on 6 October. The seasonally and calendar-adjusted decline was much larger than the 1.0% drop expected in a Reuters poll.
The headline was heavily affected by large contracts. Orders in the category covering ships, aircraft, railway equipment and military vehicles dropped 61.5%, following an exceptional jump in July. Excluding large-scale orders, the overall decline was just 0.1%.
Looking across three months gives a steadier picture: orders in June–August were 1.3% above the preceding three-month period. July's monthly increase was also revised up to 3.2%.
Why it matters
FOLITIC reading: the release signals volatility in the manufacturing pipeline, but the headline alone overstates the breadth of the setback. The next releases will help establish whether underlying demand is weakening or whether the August fall largely reflects the timing of major contracts.
