What happened

German industrial production increased 2.0% in August from the previous month, according to data reported on 7 October. The gain exceeded the 0.5% rise expected in a Reuters poll and more than reversed July's revised 1.2% decline.

The rebound was the strongest monthly increase since March 2025. Construction and machinery supported the improvement despite low water levels disrupting shipping on the Rhine.

Excluding energy and construction, industrial output rose a more modest 0.6%. Machinery and equipment production increased 5.3%, underlining why the composition of the headline matters.

Why it matters

FOLITIC reading: output measures what factories and other producers have delivered, while new orders describe part of their future workload. The two indicators can move differently in the same month, especially when major contracts are unevenly distributed.

The August rebound is encouraging for current activity, but one monthly increase is insufficient to establish a durable recovery. The breadth of production growth and subsequent orders will help assess whether the momentum can continue.
