The evidence

Tether’s second quarter 2026 announcement reported approximately $187.75 billion in assets and $183.64 billion in liabilities as of June 30. About $183.62 billion of the liabilities related to digital tokens issued. The company reported a reserve excess of approximately $4.11 billion.

These are issuer reported financial figures for a specified date. They are not wallet balances, transfer volumes or a prediction of future redemption capacity.

FOLITIC analysis

Onchain supply and reserve backing answer different questions. A ledger can show issuance and movement of tokens, but it does not independently establish the legal ownership, valuation or accessibility of every asset backing them.

Large treasury transfers need similar care. Moving tokens between issuer controlled addresses can change their distribution without creating a new customer purchase. Conversely, a redemption has a financial settlement component that a single token transaction may not fully explain.

For a holder assessing stablecoin risk, the useful comparison connects the supply definition with the scope and date of the reserve statement. Combining figures from different dates or different token populations can manufacture an apparent surplus or shortfall.

What to watch

Check the underlying reserve report, asset composition and reporting scope alongside supply data. Do not describe an attestation as a continuous guarantee or assume that a token transfer proves a change in the issuer’s bank or Treasury holdings.
