The development

Citi announced an expanded collaboration with Coinbase on September 28, 2026. Coinbase selected Citi Virtual Account Wallet to support incoming fiat payments that convert into stablecoins. A separate initiative would let institutional merchants accept stablecoin payments through Spring by Citi, with Coinbase handling acceptance and conversion into fiat. The initial rollout is focused on the United States.

FOLITIC analysis

These are two distinct payment flows. One starts with conventional money arriving in a virtual account. The other starts with a customer paying a merchant in stablecoins. Combining them into a single adoption figure would obscure who is using the service and where a blockchain asset actually enters the transaction.

For corporate users, the operational value may lie in reconciliation rather than a speculative view of crypto prices. Finance teams need to connect each payment with an invoice, identify failed transactions and reconcile the amount received after conversion. A convenient transfer channel is useful only if those records remain reliable.

Bank participation also does not make every part of a stablecoin payment identical to a bank deposit. Responsibility can change as funds move between a token issuer, a service provider and a banking account. Users need to understand the legal claim at each stage, including how refunds and disputed payments are handled.

What to watch

Watch the final availability, eligible merchants and disclosed payment volumes after launch. Compare total charges, conversion spreads and settlement reliability with existing payment routes. A partnership creates a route to distribution, while repeated customer use is the evidence that it solves a commercial problem.
