Selection and Ongoing Review · Collective Funds

A complete research case connects the fund’s legal structure, economics, portfolio risks and operating arrangements. The outcome is a reasoned decision with clear conditions, not a promise of future returns.

Define the hypothetical assignment

A retirement plan is reviewing an equity CIT for a long horizon allocation. The trustee confirms that the plan and proposed class are eligible. The committee obtains governing documents, class fees, financial reports and dealing terms. These are assumptions for this exercise, not facts about a real product.

The intended role is broad equity exposure. The comparison therefore uses a matching equity benchmark and an available alternative with similar exposure, rather than a cash fund or unrelated strategy.

Calculate the economics and risk

The candidate has $102 million of assets and $2 million of liabilities, with five million units. Its unit value is $20. A $500,000 allocation buys 25,000 units before any implementation adjustments.

Its stated annual fund cost is 0.25%, with a separate plan service charge equivalent to 0.10% on the assumed constant balance. The simplified combined annual cost is $1,750. If the equity exposure falls 30%, the $500,000 holding could fall by about $150,000 before other effects. A low cost does not make that loss impossible.

Evaluate evidence and decide

The committee checks benchmark implementation, concentration, liquidity, provider responsibilities and valuation controls. It identifies any information gaps and confirms that the fund’s exit provisions fit the plan’s requirements.

A defensible decision might accept the candidate subject to satisfactory evidence, choose an equivalent alternative with better terms, or defer while a material question remains unanswered. Record the rationale and set reviews for fees, manager changes, mandate changes and operational incidents. The quality of this process can be evaluated before the next market return is known.

Try it yourself

The candidate’s fee is attractive, but the trustee cannot yet clarify a full plan exit provision. What should the research conclusion say?

Show the worked answer

The liquidity question remains unresolved and requires clarification before a final commitment. A lower fee does not compensate for an unknown essential term.
