Execution and Contract Lifecycle · Options Trading Guide
Exercise and assignment change the form of a position. Plan for shares, cash and dividends before an option becomes an unexpected stock trade.
Distinguish a decision from an allocation
A long holder can request exercise under the contract rules. A short holder can receive an assignment when exercise is allocated through the clearing and broker process. Assignment is not a request that the writer may simply decline. Closing a short option removes that contract obligation once the closing transaction is completed, but an outstanding order alone does not remove it.
Compare exercise with selling the option
A fictional stock trades at $105 and a 100 call has an executable bid of $6. Exercising captures $5 of intrinsic value per share while surrendering the remaining $1 of sale value. Selling at the bid would receive $600 instead of realising $500 through exercise before costs and funding effects. This comparison depends on an executable quote and the investor’s broader objectives. Exercise can still be appropriate in particular circumstances.
Review dividends before the ex date
An American call writer should pay attention when an upcoming dividend makes early exercise economically attractive to a holder, especially with little remaining extrinsic value. The full decision also involves financing, transaction costs and other contract economics. A covered call can therefore lead to delivery of shares before the writer expected and loss of the associated dividend entitlement. The fact that a call has not yet expired does not ensure the shares remain in the account.
Use the broker’s actual deadline
Do not rely on a universal exercise cutoff copied from another product or broker. Learn the applicable instructions, default expiration process and procedures for contrary instructions. Calculate delivery obligations in advance. A short 80 put on 100 shares can require an $8,000 purchase even if the original premium was small. After assignment, stock exposure, borrowing costs and margin can differ from the option position. Reconcile account records promptly rather than assuming all spread legs were handled together.
Try it yourself
A 50 call has a $4.20 executable bid while the stock is $54. How much gross value per standard contract would exercise surrender relative to selling?
Show the worked answer
Intrinsic value is $4 per share. Selling captures an extra $0.20 × 100 = $20 before transaction costs and other considerations.
