Delta measures local directional exposure. Gamma explains why that exposure changes as the underlying moves. Neither is a fixed forecast.

Read the units first

Delta estimates the change in option value for a small underlying price change while other inputs remain constant. A long call usually has positive delta and a long put negative delta. Reversing the position reverses its exposure. Gamma measures the change in delta for a unit move in the underlying. Standard long calls and puts have positive gamma, while their short counterparts have negative gamma.

Translate into a position

Suppose two standard calls each have delta 0.45. Their initial share equivalent exposure is 2 × 100 × 0.45 = 90 shares. A $1 stock rise suggests about $90 of position gain using delta alone. It does not mean the contracts behave exactly like 90 shares over a large move. Delta itself changes, and volatility, time and dividends also influence value.

Add curvature carefully

For one hypothetical call with delta 0.45 and gamma 0.04, a $2 stock rise gives a second order estimate of 0.45 × 2 + 0.5 × 0.04 × 2² = $0.98 per share. Delta alone gives $0.90. The extra $0.08 represents local curvature. For a $2 fall, the same approximation is minus $0.90 plus $0.08, or minus $0.82. These are model approximations, not executable quotes.

Use scenarios beyond a single number

A delta neutral portfolio can become directional after prices change. Write down exposure at the current price, then reprice at several higher and lower prices. Near expiration, a contract close to its strike can change exposure rapidly. Hedging requires transactions and incurs costs. Treat a displayed delta as a current measurement under a model, not a constant hedge ratio or a guaranteed probability that a trade will profit.

Try it yourself

Three standard puts each have delta minus 0.30. What is the initial share equivalent exposure of the long position?

Show the worked answer

It is 3 × 100 × minus 0.30 = minus 90 shares. Selling those three puts instead would create approximately positive 90 shares of initial delta exposure.
