Advanced Option Structures · Options Trading Guide
A box spread packages a fixed terminal difference using four options. Its practical purpose is financing, with execution, collateral and settlement constraints.
Construct a long box
Combine a bull call spread and a bear put spread using the same two strikes and expiration. For lower strike 100 and upper strike 110, buy the 100 call, sell the 110 call, buy the 110 put and sell the 100 put. With matched European cash settled contracts, the combined terminal value is the $10 strike difference times the multiplier, regardless of the settlement level.
Calculate an implied return
Assume a $100 multiplier and a $980 total debit for a box paying $1,000 in 90 days. The $20 difference is about 2.04% over the period. A simple annualised rate using 365 days is approximately 8.28%. This is a hypothetical arithmetic example, not a currently available rate. Commissions, exchange charges and execution slippage reduce the return and can materially change the comparison.
Separate lending from borrowing
Buying a box resembles paying cash now for a fixed later amount. Selling the box reverses the cash flows and can resemble borrowing. Account permissions, margin treatment and withdrawal rules determine whether the cash is usable as intended. A box quote is not automatically comparable with an unsecured bank loan or a deposit because funding, collateral and operational terms differ.
Do not generalise to American contracts
Early exercise can break the timing of an American style box and create unexpected share deliveries or funding needs. Dividends and broker actions add complexity. Even a European box requires exact contract matching, reliable execution and correct settlement handling. Check all four legs, the exercise style and the official settlement definition. Reject an apparent free profit until stale prices, fees and delivery mismatches have been ruled out. A fixed contractual payoff does not remove implementation risk.
Try it yourself
A box costs $995 and pays $1,000, but total entry and settlement costs are $8. What is the net cash result?
Show the worked answer
The $5 gross difference is smaller than the $8 costs, leaving a $3 net loss.
