Pricing Research and Execution · Hybrid Securities
A research sheet should preserve contract differences and data dates. Comparable columns are useful only when their definitions and assumptions are consistent.
Create stable identity fields
Record the security identifier, legal issuer, guarantor, trading unit, currency and governing law. Keep the document links and dates. A ticker can change or represent a depositary unit rather than the full legal instrument. Stable identification prevents prices from one series being combined with terms from another.
Separate contractual and market information
Contractual fields include ranking, payment formula, maturity, calls, conversion and loss absorption terms. Market fields include bid, ask, size, timestamp, accrued amount and currency conversion rate. Analyst fields include forecasts, valuation assumptions and scenario results. Keeping these groups distinct makes it clear which numbers are facts and which require judgement.
Normalise only where justified
Suppose Security A quotes $25 per unit and Security B quotes 101% of $1,000 principal. Their raw prices cannot be ranked as expensive or cheap. Translate them into comparable cash costs, then compare relevant returns and risks. Likewise, an annual rate and a quarterly payment amount should not share a column without a stated conversion method.
Use explicit unavailable values when information is missing. A blank dividend field must not become zero, and an unknown maturity must not become the first call date. These substitutions can silently distort every later calculation.
Design a review trail
Add a review date, unresolved questions and the source for every material clause. Flag changes to payment terms, ratings, corporate actions or issuer notices. Keep historical snapshots so later corrections do not erase the evidence used for a decision. The purpose of the sheet is disciplined comparison, not an automatic buy signal. A security can remain ineligible even when it offers the highest displayed yield.
Try it yourself
One instrument has an expected call in 2029 but no maturity. How should those facts appear in the research sheet?
Show the worked answer
Record the optional call date separately and mark the instrument as perpetual or without an ordinary maturity according to its terms. Do not populate maturity with the expected call.
