Execution and Contract Lifecycle · Forwards Trading Guide

A changed invoice does not automatically change its hedge. Amendments, novations and break clauses each alter a different part of the contract relationship.

Treat amendments as contractual changes

Changing a forward amount, date or settlement currency requires the applicable agreement and consent process. The change may trigger a valuation adjustment, spread or fee. If an invoice falls from EUR 500,000 to EUR 400,000, the original EUR 500,000 forward remains binding until a valid amendment or other action addresses the difference.

Understand a novation

A novation replaces a contractual relationship with another under agreed terms, often substituting a party. It differs from merely changing bank instructions or assigning an expected receipt. Required consents, effective time, collateral treatment and release of the original party must be documented. Do not assume a group reorganisation automatically transfers all derivative obligations.

Read the break clause precisely

A break clause may give specified rights to terminate or reset a transaction on defined dates or events. It does not necessarily mean termination is free. Notice periods, valuation rules and payments can still apply. A customer request to exit is different from a contractual right that the counterparty is obliged to honour under stated conditions.

Reconcile every system after a change

Update the trade record, exposure schedule, settlement instructions, collateral forecast and approval log together. Retain the original confirmation and the effective amendment or replacement documents. Check that old instructions cannot accidentally trigger a duplicate payment. Accounting and legal effects depend on the facts and should be reviewed separately from the dealing desk’s pricing explanation.

Try it yourself

A supplier postpones delivery by one month. Can treasury simply change the forward maturity in its spreadsheet and rely on that new date?

Show the worked answer

No. The contractual maturity remains unchanged unless the agreed process validly changes it. Treasury must arrange and confirm any amendment or replacement and assess its pricing and cash effects.
