The development

LCH’s July 23, 2026 dashboard reported $1,165 trillion of service notional cleared at SwapClear in the first half, up 29% from a year earlier. Client notional reached $414 trillion, up 36%. The figures measure clearing activity over the period. They are not a statement that an equivalent amount of cash was invested or could be lost.

FOLITIC analysis: duration changes the meaning of size

Two interest rate swaps with equal notional can respond very differently to a change in rates. Maturity, payment structure and the shape of the yield curve determine their sensitivity. Netting and offsetting positions further separate gross activity from the portfolio’s remaining exposure.

For a borrower, the economic purpose may be to change floating payments into more predictable fixed payments. For another participant, the same market may be used to express a rate view. Aggregate clearing totals do not reveal that mix of motives.

The cash question behind the headline

Central clearing standardizes important parts of risk management, but it does not eliminate funding needs. Variation margin can demand cash as market values move, even when a swap remains an effective hedge of a liability over its full life.

Read clearing growth together with maturity exposure, margin requirements and liquidity resources. The most useful question for a portfolio is whether its hedge and funding plan work under stress. A record in gross notional tells us the infrastructure is busy, not that every participant has become more leveraged by the same proportion.
