The development

Stellantis announced on March 11, 2026 that it had priced subordinated perpetual hybrids the previous day. The euro tranches were €2.2 billion at an initial 6.25% coupon and €1.8 billion at 6.875%. A £865 million sterling tranche carried an initial 8.25% coupon. The announcement set out different first reset dates and expected settlement on March 16.

FOLITIC analysis: the largest coupon may not pay most

An investor measuring returns in euros cannot compare a sterling coupon with a euro coupon without considering exchange rates or the cost of currency protection. A higher foreign currency income rate can be offset by an unfavorable currency move.

Perpetual structure adds another distinction. There is no ordinary fixed maturity at which the investor can assume repayment of principal. Call provisions, reset terms and issuer credit conditions affect the expected life and price sensitivity of the security.

Build a comparison on common terms

Evaluate each tranche in the same reporting currency and under consistent assumptions about calls and resets. If currency hedging is part of the plan, include its cost and the need to renew it. A bond quote alone does not capture that combined position.

For shareholders, the financing provides context on liquidity and the cost of capital. It should be assessed alongside operating cash generation and other debt obligations. The pricing announcement describes financing terms, not a forecast that the company’s underlying automotive business will earn more than those funding costs.
