The development

A Platts notice dated September 22, 2026 set October 1 for new JKM forward cargo eWindow instruments covering H+7 through H+10 and a third monthly JKM forwards assessment. The extension complements existing nearer cargo periods. This is a change to physical forward price assessment infrastructure, not the launch of an exchange futures contract.

FOLITIC analysis: more dates improve comparison

A longer forward horizon can help a buyer compare delivery periods without relying only on the nearest cargo. It can also reveal whether the cost of securing later supply differs materially from current delivery. That difference is not a guaranteed return available to every trader.

Physical LNG transactions include terms beyond the benchmark price. Delivery location, cargo size, quality, timing flexibility and shipping arrangements can all change the economics. Two prices carrying the same broad gas label may describe different commercial commitments.

Use the benchmark for the right question

For a utility, the useful comparison is between the assessment period and the delivery obligations it needs to cover. For an investor, it is whether changes in the forward curve alter the cash flow assumptions behind a company’s contracts.

A published assessment is a methodology based reference, not a promise that a particular cargo can be bought or sold at that number. Before linking a derivative hedge to physical purchases, verify the reference month and the contractual basis. More assessment points make analysis more detailed, but they do not eliminate basis or logistics risk.
