The development
The EBA announced on February 26, 2026 that its central validation function for ISDA SIMM would start on March 1. The framework covers a model used to calculate initial margin for derivatives that are not centrally cleared. It set out staged onboarding and applications, with a first validation decision expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.

FOLITIC analysis: validation and protection are different
A margin model estimates collateral needs under specified assumptions. Validation reviews the model and its governance. It does not certify that every trade is suitable, that a counterparty cannot fail or that collateral will cover every conceivable market move.
For institutions using uncleared swaps, the relevant operational chain includes accurate trade data, consistent risk sensitivities and agreement with counterparties. A centrally reviewed methodology cannot compensate for an incorrectly booked maturity or a missing position in the calculation.
What to track as the process develops
Watch the published decision, the counterparties it covers and the treatment of subsequent model changes. An expected decision date should not be confused with evidence that authorization has already been granted to every user.
From a portfolio perspective, initial margin ties up eligible assets and can change as risk changes. That financing burden belongs in the cost of a hedge. Institutions need liquidity plans and reconciliation procedures alongside their model documentation. The regulatory development strengthens a common supervisory process, while the economics and management of each derivatives book remain specific to its owner.
