The development

CME said on September 15, 2026 that futures on the S&P UBS USD Liquid Leveraged Loan Index had begun trading on September 14. The contracts are centrally cleared and listed on CBOT, with access through Globex and ClearPort. They extend the exchange’s credit product range into an index of leveraged loans.

FOLITIC analysis: a loan hedge is not a bond hedge

A loan portfolio combines borrower credit risk with the terms of its interest payments. Its sensitivity can differ from a portfolio of fixed coupon bonds, even when the borrowers have similar credit ratings. A broad bond futures position is therefore not automatically a substitute for a loan index hedge.

An index future may make portfolio adjustments easier to implement than trading many individual loans. The tradeoff is basis risk. Sector weights, issuer selection and the treatment of distressed borrowers can cause the portfolio and index to move differently.

What investors should monitor

The launch establishes availability, not mature liquidity. Watch executable spreads, depth and the ability to roll between expirations. A small premium advantage can disappear if a large position must be unwound in a thin market.

Evaluate the hedge against the actual holdings and the intended holding period. Daily margin payments can create cash needs before a cash loan position is sold. A successful economic hedge must remain fundable through adverse price moves, rather than working only at its eventual closing date.
