The development
LCH’s April 29, 2026 CDSClear update reported €3.1 trillion of notional cleared in the first quarter, 16% more than a year earlier. Client notional reached €968 billion, a 26% increase. These are measures of cleared activity, not the amount of corporate bonds purchased or a forecast of credit losses.

FOLITIC analysis: protection is a separate contract
A credit default swap transfers specified credit risk under contractual terms. It does not give the protection buyer every right associated with owning a bond. The reference entity, eligible obligations and defined credit events determine what the contract actually covers.
A portfolio manager can buy protection while continuing to hold a bond, reducing part of the credit exposure. Another participant can sell protection without buying the same bond. This is why gross activity cannot be read as a simple vote for rising or falling corporate debt prices.
Where a hedge can diverge
The bond and its intended hedge may respond differently to liquidity conditions, funding costs or changes in the relevant benchmark. An index hedge also introduces the difference between the portfolio’s issuers and the index basket.
Before treating a cleared contract as a complete hedge, compare the reference exposure, maturity and settlement terms. Margin calls create liquidity needs of their own. CDSClear’s growth is relevant to market infrastructure and access, while the quality of a specific hedge still depends on how closely it matches the risk being managed.
