The development
Cboe’s October 5, 2026 volume report put September index options average daily volume at about 6.42 million contracts, up 22.3% from a year earlier. FOLITIC analysis: activity is not a position
Volume counts contracts traded. It does not reveal the net exposure left after investors close, roll or offset positions. A large session can include repeated transactions in the same contract, so it cannot be read as an equivalent amount of fresh capital entering the market.
Options close to expiry have little time remaining for a thesis to work. Their sensitivity to an underlying move can change rapidly, particularly near the strike. That makes execution timing and position size more important than a headline about record participation.
The useful follow through
Read volume alongside open interest, the distribution of strikes and quoted spreads. Even together, these measures do not identify every participant’s motive. A purchased call may offset a short position elsewhere.
For a portfolio owner, the relevant question is whether the hedge covers the period of risk. Repeatedly buying very short protection can introduce gaps and repeated costs. A record volume month is evidence of market usage, not evidence that the strategy used by the busiest traders is suitable for everyone.
