The development
Cboe and S&P Dow Jones Indices announced a 25 year extension of their exclusive licensing agreement on September 29, 2026. The arrangement runs through 2051 and preserves Cboe’s rights around SPX options. The announcement also described potential collaboration on tokenized options. That is a development agenda, not confirmation that a tokenized product is already trading.

FOLITIC analysis: continuity has a price
For institutions using index options as a recurring hedge, continuity reduces uncertainty about where the core contract will trade. Existing systems, settlement processes and trading relationships can remain relevant across investment cycles.
Exclusivity does not, by itself, tell an investor whether a particular expiry offers competitive execution. The displayed spread, available size and fees still determine the cost of entering and adjusting a hedge. A familiar contract can be expensive when demand for protection concentrates around a major event.
What to compare before trading
Compare the total cost for the intended maturity and strike, rather than treating the exchange agreement as a forecast for option prices. Index options and options on an index fund can differ in exercise, settlement and tax treatment.
For any future tokenized offering, the practical questions would be custody, settlement finality and who may access the product. Those terms need a separate product announcement. They should not be inferred from the duration of the existing license.
