A correct trading decision can still fail through an incorrect transfer. Learn how custody, networks and transaction checks fit together.
Understand control of the keys
A custodial service controls the keys used to move assets and maintains a claim or balance for its customer. With personal custody, you control the signing credentials and also take responsibility for protecting them. A wallet interface does not physically contain coins. It helps interact with assets recorded on a network.
Check the complete transfer route
Match the asset, destination network and receiving service’s instructions. An address that looks valid is not proof that the destination supports that asset on that network. Some deposits require an additional memo or tag. Check minimum deposit amounts, network fees and confirmations. Copying a familiar ticker is insufficient when several tokens use similar names.
Use a deliberate verification sequence
Imagine transferring a fictional 500 token balance. First verify the destination through a trusted channel, then inspect the address on the signing device. If appropriate, send a small amount above the receiving minimum and confirm that it is credited before sending the remainder. A successful test reduces some routing mistakes but does not establish that the recipient or investment is trustworthy.
Protect recovery and permissions
Keep recovery phrases and private keys private. Do not enter them into a link supplied by supposed support. Protect recovery material separately from the daily device. A hardware wallet does not make an unsafe contract approval harmless. Review the network, recipient, requested permissions and amount before signing. Preserve transaction hashes and a recovery procedure without storing secrets in a trading journal.
Try it yourself
Your test transfer appears confirmed in an explorer but has not reached the exchange balance. Should you immediately send the rest?
Show the worked answer
No. Check the exchange’s required confirmations, deposit network, minimum and any memo requirement. Network confirmation and exchange credit are separate states.
