Owning many tokens can still mean taking one broad market bet. Measure shared exposure and the capital needed to recover after a drawdown.

Look through the ticker list

Diversification depends on different risk drivers, not just the number of holdings. Several tokens can share a dependence on liquidity, the same network, one stablecoin or a single exchange. A spot holding and a long perpetual on the same asset add directional exposure rather than diversify it.

Apply a stated scenario

Consider a fictional $10,000 portfolio with $4,000 in asset A, $3,000 in asset B and $3,000 in cash. If A falls 20% and B falls 30%, the loss is $800 plus $900 = $1,700, or 17% of the portfolio. This is a scenario, not a probability forecast. If the cash component is a tokenised claim that also loses value, it needs its own shock.

Calculate recovery correctly

After a 20% drawdown, $100 becomes $80. Returning to $100 requires a 25% gain. After a 50% drawdown, recovery requires 100%. The recovery percentage grows faster as losses deepen. Compare portfolio value with its previous peak and adjust performance measurement for deposits and withdrawals so cash movements do not masquerade as trading returns.

Add operational stress

Test a venue outage, delayed collateral transfer, stablecoin depeg and simultaneous liquidity decline. A hedge on a separate venue may not provide usable collateral where the loss occurs. Historical correlation is an estimate that can change sharply during stress. Write down which positions must be reduced first and whether the required liquidity exists. Review concentration by asset, protocol, custodian and collateral currency, not only by sector label.

Try it yourself

A portfolio falls from $20,000 to $15,000 without cash flows. What is its drawdown and required recovery?

Show the worked answer

The drawdown is 25%. Recovering $5,000 from a $15,000 base requires about 33.33%.
